Travelling with a Laptop Internationally: New Baggage Rules in 2023

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) proposed new rules for laptops on planes in 2023. The new rules are designed to reduce the risk of lithium battery fires that could result in an aircraft evacuation.

The IATA said it is “one of the most comprehensive and detailed reviews of cabin safety ever undertaken by an aviation organisation”.

The new rules cover lithium batteries in mobile phones, laptops and cameras, which may pose a risk if they overheat or catch fire. They also propose restrictions on passengers carrying spare batteries that are not installed in equipment such as laptops or mobile phones.

So, if you’re travelling with a laptop internationally, in this article we will explain about the New rules for laptops on planes and also answer the FAQ’s of travelers.

Laptop in Checked Luggage TSA

Like all electronic devices, laptops are subject to inspection by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). While you can do many things to protect your laptop from damage, you should be aware of your options if you have to check it with your luggage.

The TSA provides a list of tips for protecting your laptop in checked luggage. They include:

  1. Use a padded laptop case or sleeve to protect against impact.
  2. Locate your laptop at the top of your suitcase so it stays the same during travel.
  3. Use a lock to secure the zipper outside your bag so no one can open it.
  4. When travelling internationally, check with your airline about whether they offer insurance for lost or damaged items in checked baggage.

The TSA’s website says passengers can pack their laptops in their checked luggage, but they must follow specific rules when travelling with a laptop internationally.

Laptop computers are allowed in checked bags if you pack them properly. Passengers should remove any external hard drives, CDs, DVDs and removable drives such as USB sticks, floppy disks and Zip drives before packing them into their bags.

You must pack these items separately from the laptop in your carry-on luggage or other approved containers.

Passengers must also remove any batteries or other electrical components from their laptops and place them in an exterior pocket of the bag so that they are not a hazard to other travelers.

Are Laptops Allowed in Carry On Baggage

In general, laptops are allowed in checked baggage. But, if you are travelling with a laptop and want to check it as luggage, there are some important things to consider.

Some airlines have banned laptops because they’re considered a security risk. As of 2016, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security allows passengers to bring their laptops into the cabin on U.S. airlines operating flights from international destinations. But, before boarding the plane, they must remove any batteries or uncharged devices.

If you’re concerned about damaging your laptop during travel or losing it, consider buying a protective case or a hard-sided suitcase that can hold it safely during transit.

Is Laptop Allowed in Check In Hand Baggage?

Yes, most airlines allow passengers to check in small laptops and tablets as long as they meet specific size requirements.

You can bring these devices on board as long as you pack them in a TSA-approved hard-sided case and are at most 11x17x1 inches (28x43x2 centimetres). If your laptop meets these requirements, it should be allowed in your check-in hand baggage.

Are Laptops Allowed in Carry On Baggage

Laptops are allowed in carry-on baggage, but you must store them in an approved laptop sleeve or case. According to the TSA website, these cases are readily available at most airports and shopping centres.

They also come in various sizes and colours, so you can find one that matches your style. It’s important to note that the TSA does not require you to use this type of case if you prefer to use your own bag as long as it meets security requirements.

Why Are Laptops Not Allowed in Checked Baggage?

Laptops are not allowed in checked baggage on any airline for the following Reasons-

  • Laptops are particularly vulnerable to damage from impact, exposure and theft. Because of this, laptops must be carried on your person or in a carry-on bag (if you have one).
  • Laptops pose a particular risk for theft as well. The more valuable the laptop, the more likely it will be stolen. In fact, many airlines have reported that laptops are one of the most frequently stolen items on their planes.
  • In addition to theft, there are other risks associated with checking laptops in baggage. When checked baggage is exposed to extreme temperatures, such as heat or cold, it can cause the hardware inside to break down faster than normal.
  • Laptops (and other electronic devices) contain lithium batteries, which can overheat and catch fire if damaged or defective. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) prohibits them from being checked as cargo because they pose a significant fire hazard. Lithium batteries can also explode when exposed to extreme heat or pressure.
